VLAMINGH HEAD LIGHTHOUSE 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

3 - 10th December 2012 EXMOUTH

Celebrations of the 100th anniversary will take place from Monday, 3 to Monday, 10 December. The week will be full of festivities including a gala ball with a 9-piece big band, camping on the grounds of the old lighthouse keepers quarters, art exhibition of local works and screening of projection art. Tours of the lighthouse will be conducted during the week (this is not a regular occurrence). Celebrations on Saturday, 8 December will include a lantern procession, light show and a performance by local musicians. I believe one of the original lighthouse keepers (who is now in his 80s) is even going to Exmouth for the centenary so to light the kerosene lamp in the original way. The Vlamingh Head Lighthouse lamp is the only one in the world that can still operate this way and when it’s lit in December for the anniversary it will be the first time in 50 years that the beam will do a 360 circle. Event organisers have received special approval to do this, usually it just goes part of the way around. The last time the lighthouse beam shone was about two years ago.
